Villa Ariadne, Drapanias
Ariadne was built in stages about 100 years ago and sat on what
was once the twisting main road from Chania to Kastelli. Now the
traffic on the quiet street is mainly agricultural tractors, or
visitors to the “town hall” next door but one. Drapanias is a
completely natural, ungentrified agricultural working village
with no pretensions whatsoever. There are two mini markets,
three Kafeneons/tavernas, and a baker's shop. Ariadne is sited
in an area of genuine Cretan culture. There are no foreign-owned
housing developments or tourist accommodation anywhere nearby.

An unspoilt natural sandy beach is 10/15 minutes easy walk away (or 2 minutes
drive) through lush, shady olive groves and fields which often stretch right
down to the sea.
This is a glorious spot for swimming and sunbathing |
|
 |
 |
|
There are three tavernas on or near the six km beach - otherwise
there is nothing but a patchwork of fields and the occasional
house.
Two km along the coast, in the corner of the bay at Nopigia, the
sand gives way to rocky grandeur and wonderful countryside for
walking and exploring. |

Inside and immediately to the left is a double bedroom.
Then a wide hallway opens out into a sitting dining area with a
woodburning stove and thick old walls with many of the original
dressed Roman stones revealed through the plasterwork. The
toilet shower-room has a huge walk-in two person shower.
The fully-fitted kitchen opens through an archway at the end of
the hallway. |

|
Opposite the kitchen through another arch is a small double bedroom that can also be used as a rear sitting room, or even a dining room, depending on how many people are living in the house and/or personal preferences. |

Through Ariadne's back door is a very private walled rear garden with
lemon and orange trees. The garden is not overlooked at all and is ideal
for very private sunbathing in between the shade of the trees. Very
romantic. |

| Drapanias |
 |
| This is a completely genuine quiet farming village, not at all spoiled or changed by the march of time or tourism. Once it was a thriving community on the old main road from Chania to Kastelli but nowadays, whilst it may be peacefully off the beaten track, it still has local shops and Kafeneons for immediate needs and the village is still
on the main bus route |
 |
|
|
 |
|
|
 |
| The new national road
junction is only two minutes away so, despite the peace and
quiet, external communications for touring and more
sophisticated activities such as shopping, clubbing and
dining-out are excellent... |
 |
 |
 |
| ...and of course the clear blue sea is never more than a few minutes away. |
