Villa Lemonia, Drapanias

The house sits on what was once the twisting main road from Chania to Kastelli. It is in a central position in the best part of the village. Now the traffic on the quiet street is mainly agricultural tractors, or visitors to the “town hall” next door but one.

Drapanias is a completely natural, un-gentrified, agricultural working village with no pretensions whatsoever. There are two mini markets, three Kafeneons/Tavernas, and two baker's shops.

This house in an area of genuine Cretan culture - there are no foreign-owned housing estate developments or tourist accommodation anywhere nearby.

Lemonia is next door and to the right of our Villa Ariadne. Both houses are entirely separate and do not overlook each other. From the street and to the right hand side of a big Lemon tree, there is a small driveway that leads to the front door of Lemonia and the front garden.

The inside of the house follows an old Cretan tradition of having a mezzanine style - or “Ondas” in Greek. There is a small arched entrance lobby and to the left of the entrance is the sitting room that opens out through a bay window and double glass doors onto the front garden. Much use has been made of windows and shutters to create a feeling of space and light without suffering heat in the summer. The ceiling here is almost the full height of the house.

Ahead from the entrance lobby is an archway through to the kitchen. Continuing round to the right there is the staircase to the mezzanine and the door to the bathroom in which there is a two-person shower/bath and WC etc plus a washing machine.

The kitchen and bathroom are therefore under the mezzanine floor, which is the double bedroom. The short staircase leads up to the bedroom and a balcony area that has wardrobes and a store cupboard.

The balcony overlooks part of the sitting room but is designed in such a way that there is complete privacy one room to the other, except at the head of the stairs when the view down to the traditional wood-burning stove and the sitting room is very attractive. The bedroom window overlooks the back garden through the leaves of the grapevine. The front garden leads from the double doors in the sitting room and has a patio, lemon tree, olive tree and flower beds. The elevated position of the house allows one to watch the world go by in shaded seclusion.

Outside through the kitchen double doors at the back of the house, there is a completely enclosed walled garden with a large patio under the shade of a grape vine.

The rest of the garden has pathways and low earth retaining walls and is planted with trees, shrubs and rock plants plus space for growing salad vegetables etc.

Water heating in the house is by an electric boiler on a time switch and winter heating is by wood-burning stove.

The house has a telephone and full ADSL Broadband internet connection ready for use. Cooking is by bottled butane gas - each bottle lasts around six to eight weeks of average use.

Drapanias

Drapanias has not been spoiled or changed by the march of time or tourism. Once it was a thriving community on the old main road from Chania to Kastelli but nowadays, whilst it may be peacefully off the beaten track, it still has local shops and Kafeneons for immediate needs and the village is still on the main bus route.

The new national road junction is only two minutes away so, despite the peace and quiet, external communications for touring and more sophisticated activities such as shopping, clubbing and dining-out are excellent.

The unspoilt natural sandy beach is a glorious spot for swimming and sunbathing. It’s just an easy 10/15 minutes walk away (or 2 minutes drive) through lush, shady olive groves and fields, which often stretch right down to the sea. There are three tavernas on or near the six-km beach - otherwise there is nothing but a patchwork of fields and the occasional house. Two km along the coast, in the corner of the bay at Nopigia, the sand gives way to rocky grandeur and wonderful countryside for walking and exploring.
